I am Joseph Nowell, founder and pharmacist at Fresh Pharmacy, a functional medicine compounding pharmacy located just outside Knoxville, Tennessee. My journey began with a Graphic Design degree from Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, where I served as graphic designer for Business First Magazine and won 1st Place in the 1990 Birmingham Ad competition. After pharmacy school, I worked in a biomedical research rat lab, then at Tracy’s Medicine Center in Atlanta, where I expanded the compounding department and developed formulas for veterinary care and anti-aging practitioners—most notably DHEA and custom hormone encapsulation. I studied advanced compounding under Bob and Diana Harshbarger in Kingsport, Tennessee, and right after graduation visited the Santa Monica Homeopathic Pharmacy in Del Rey, California. There, I realized that six years of pharmacy training had taught me nothing about herbal, homeopathic, or supplemental medicine. That moment launched a lifelong self-directed journey into integrative and functional approaches. All healthcare professionals graduate as patsies for big pharma without realizing it. Some of us, after working in the system, recognize “something is rotten in the state of Denmark,” as Hamlet so eloquently stated. We return to original textbooks, relearn foundational biochemistry, and embrace functional medicine—even when it stands in opposition to our training, insurance requirements, the broader system, and our peers. I believe less medicine is better. I approach every patient from a primary (supplementation), secondary (herbal), and tertiary (manufactured medication) viewpoint—because no one is “low on Ambien,” and natural options like magnesium, pyridoxal-5-phosphate, melatonin, or tryptophan often address root causes more safely and effectively. As the first in East Tennessee to bring 3D printing into a pharmacy for customized medications, I am driven to bridge traditional science with innovative, patient-centered care. We specialize in alternative therapies for cancer support, detoxification, COVID and long-haul COVID recovery, and complex conditions where others have no answers. Through education, advocacy, and relentless innovation, I strive to change a broken sickcare system into true healthcare—one patient at a time.
